What roof top tent do I need?
Are you looking to be camping in humid parts of the country? Make sure to choose a 3-season roof top tent that can handle heavy rain, yet has a thinner canvas and the to offer better ventilation and less condensation. We recommend Guana Equipment or Front Runner roof top tents.
Looking to camp all year round? Want to camp in South Australia, Victoria or even Tasmania? You will want a roof top tent with a thicker canvas, better insulation in the base, and overall suited for winter or cold camping. We recommend Eezi-Awn or Camp King roof top tents.
Will you be camping regularly, and moving campsites every night or fortnight? We recommend a hard shell roof top tent, perhaps with a clamshell design so that opening and closing it is quick, easy and effortless. In said case, once again we recommend the Eezi-Awn Blade or Camp King Industries.
Do you need more space in your rooftop tent, to camp with one or two mates? Then a soft-shell roof top tent will do the trick, they are more spacious and you can get an annex with them, where people or pets can sleep, or to be used as a changing room. We recommend the Guana Equipment Wanaka 55" roof top tent.
Softshell or hardshell roof top tent?
This is a great question, and partially answered above. The roof top tent design or make you need depends on what you will use it for. Hardshell roof top tents, normally made from fiberglass or aluminum, are much heavier and do take more space on the roof or roof rack of your vehicle.
They tend to last longer, and are more resistant to hazards from rain, branches, dust and other elements. Their design can be a pop up roof top tent or a clamshell roof top tent, with the latter being the fastest to open and close.
Due to their design, they tend to fit 2 or maximum 3 people, although a few models can sleep more.
Softshell roof top tents are more affordable, take less space in the roof rack, or bed rack for that matter. They are also lighter, and on average are more spacious, and depending on the model you can sleep from 2 up to 5 people.
They are entirely made of canvas, except for the aluminum base. They are more breathable and create less condensation if conditions are very humid or even warm.
However, they do take a bit longer to set up and pack down, around 5 minutes.
Will my car work with a roof top tent?
Short answer is yes, as long as your vehicle has reliable racks, then a roof top tent can be mounted on top of it.
However, you want to make sure it is a proper roof rack, and hopefully the car you have is either a 4wd, a ute, or a 4x4 vehicle that can handle larger weights. Although roof top tents can be installed even over a Mini Cooper, it's better if they are installe don larger vehicles such as a Toyota Hilux or a Mitsubishi Pajero.
That said, as long as you have a reliable roof rack, with a weight rating not lower than the weight of the roof top tent itself, then you can mount it. Just make sure you follow the manufacturer's safety and load rating recommendations and don't push it too far with unnecessary risks.
